Everyone has their favorite methods, tricks and tools for completing their work. As a Mac Webdesigner/developer, I thought I’d share my list of indispensable software and resources that I use on virtually every project. I wouldn’t call this list exhaustive as I have left out a couple things like an FTP client (though I do [...]
I’m constantly in conversations with people concerning the perfect tools for different stages during a project. One stage that seems to come up in everyone’s process is creating wireframes. I’ve heard of people using Apple’s Numbers, Fireworks or Balsamiq, which all have there pros and cons. Tracey Varnell, a fellow Experience Architect at EffectiveUI, pitched me [...]
In my presentation last week at CD2, I mentioned I would provide a list of the resources I recommend using as reference in designing application interfaces. I thought I might get a chance to blog that list this past weekend, but I was a tad busy, designing interfaces for an RIA, naturally. We at Iona [...]
Though many of you may have seen this already, I would be remiss in not showing the rest of the readers here this amazing new interface concept from Adaptive Path and The Mozilla Labs. Aurora (Part 1) from Adaptive Path on Vimeo. This video was released a couple of weeks ago and represents some key concepts that [...]

A rambling yet somehow strangely coherent spiel on how America’s graphic heritage is being washed away by FastSigns and other commoditized design factories. Some good points here, and it looks as though there is a lot more to come. Why Amierca is F***ed
Adaptive Path put together a proof of concept for a new way of browsing the web as part of the Mozilla Labs Concept Browser Series. Adaptive Path gives a description of the project, called Aurora: Aurora is a concept video exploring one possible future user experience for the Web, created by Adaptive Path as part of [...]

With a presentation I’m going to be giving on Data Visualization at 360|Flex with Tony Hillerson and the recent Edward Tufte visit to Denver, I’ve had a lot of data visualization on the brain. I’m always on the look out for good examples of visualizations that solve a problem well without going overboard. One of the [...]
Ethan Eismann pointed out a useful site, called Scrnshots, that allows you upload, comment and tag screenshots. I love these types of community sites that help open a discussion around design. They make it super easy for you to contribute by providing a desktop application(shown below) that allows you to make screenshots and upload them [...]
It seems everyone was a-buzz when Iron Man was released in theaters not too long ago and rightfully so. When I saw the movie I was amazed by the visual effects and details that seemed to go into every minute of the film. Being involved with UI design I couldn’t help but stare at the [...]
I made those images using 3D Studio Max, Illustrator and Photoshop. The fillings consist out of five diffrent colour themes: acid, lovely, retro, funky and psycho. You can download the images (pills.zip) (injections.zip) (blood_bottles.zip) and use them for whatever (Flyer, Poster, Screendesign, …) you want. Feel free to email us a sample of your work: [...]
The “drip symbols” truetype font was created by Tojio and published here on Tojio Lab first. It is freeware, you can use it any way you want to. Enjoy! Download drip_symbols.zip file here.
From a web application I recently used that shall remain nameless:
We often run into a scenario at work where we have to create an object from xml. More specifically we are parsing xml files with exercise (or assessment item) data to a concrete exercise type like a MultipleChoice, FillGaps, HotSpot, etc. The thing is that we are supporting several xml dialects for the same type [...]
How unsexy are Wordpress security updates? I have the horrible habit of doing everything else first before attempting one (which, of course, is absolutely the worst thing you can do, as the recent spam hack on the SWX blog demonstrated so well). I used to dread doing the updates mainly because I just knew something [...]

As a designer, I often find myself searching for inspiration anywhere I'm lucky enough to find it. Sometimes it can be as simple as a bumper sticker or as complex as a full scale print by Joshua Davis.  However I also find a lot of inspiration, in my daily interactions with random individuals I so happen to meet. Night or day. But ever so often I encounter an object that I just can't  get out of my head. An object that speaks to me in the most intimate fashion possible. Awakening my passion for thought and creativity, leaving me but with one thought; "Holy shit! I must design something around this!".

For yours truly, that experience came rushing once I say the B120 Wraith motorcycle by the Confederate Motor Company. I was speechless and blown away to say the very least. I've never seen anything like it and at that point I knew I had found the source of inspiration for Saffron's user interface. I'll definitely go over this rabbit hole of a journey in my session at FITC Hollywood. I'm looking forward to talking about the design process and showing which pieces of the Wraith ultimately garnered my attention as an inspirational source.

cheers,
Sam
