No, seriously. Magic. Like, by a magician. Magic tricks. Magician Jamy Ian Swiss will be hosting the Film Festival. Jamy Ian Swiss, a New York native, has been awing audiences across the country since the ripe age of 29 earning recognition along the lines of “one of the most masterly sleight of hand techniques in the world” (New Yorker). If you are thinking of going to FlashForward in San Francisco next month, and haven’t paid up yet, use the code, FFCOM100, and get $100 off. I’m actually getting pretty excited for this one. The whole one-track, 20-minute sessions is different, but I think it’s great someone is at least trying something different. Also, the fact [...]
I can't believe I missed this when it first came out (it was probably because I'd just started on the my crazy two-month trip to simultaneously learn Google App Engine, brush up my Python, and build the new Singularity web site): Brooks Andrus from Techsmith, whom I always end up having a lovely conversation with [...]

My idea is to present a selection of all the material I’ve presented during the last year, plus some new exciting work never show [...]

Here Mike Downey presented a ton of new web possibilities using the Adobe AIR runtime - hence the keynote strapline: “The long arm of the web”. Sounds like a mix between a Tim O’Reilly soundbite and a totallitarian government mantra… Happily the content was less opressive and more inspired than the strapline suggests! A few interesting [...]
[10.32] Aral is about to start. My laptop is running out of juice, so we’ll see how far we get.
I’m sitting at the keynote of Multi-Mania. Serge and Jason are talking about the history of Flash. Actually, Serge is talking to the crowd and Jason is adding some sound effects. They are quite a funny duo Serge is talking about The Open Screen Project. Flash Player 10 now. Let’s talk new features: - custom filters [...]
I’m getting ready to take off for Webmaniacs to present during the FlexManiacs portion which starts on Wednesday. I’ll be presenting on Degrafa, its features and what the next release will bring. Of course, you can always check out the dev branch to get a hint. One thing I noticed is that Degrafa session is listed [...]
“Pixel Bender” ? Really ? [Fill in my excuse for not posting in such a long time]. There’s so much to tell, hence the weird title. Let’s start of with todays news; Adobe renames Hydra to Pixel Bender. They actually did it….now…it might be me…but wasn’t Hydra a way cooler name then “Pixel Bender” ? [...]

Over the last year, my API overview presentation has evolved through 3 beta releases and the official AIR 1.0 launch. I have been a little slow in updating the examples, but I have just posted the updated archive file here. This archive file contains ten examples:

  • example_applicationicons - An example of specifying an application icon within the application descriptor.
  • example_fileicons - Loading the icon of a specific file from the system, and setting the application icon at runtime using the retrieved icon.
  • example_localstore - Usage of the EncryptedLocalStore API.
  • example_nativedrag - Dragging data out of an AIR application. Also shows the usage of the Clipboard API.
  • example_nativefiledialogue - Launching native file dialogs and writing data to the disk.
  • example_nativewindows - Launching different types of native windows and and example of creating a transparent window.
  • example_objectserialization - Serializing ActionScript objects and writing and reading them from the disk using the File API.
  • example_servicemonitor - Watching for events when the application goes online or offline.
  • example_sqlinsertperformance - A quick example showing the performance of the local database API when using transactions vs. when not using transactions.
  • example_transparentwindowskin - How to create a completely custom window skin.

There is no doubt that micro-content is the new way to communicate with the world. After more than five years of blogging, I find myself spending much more time on sites like Twitter, Pownce, YouTube, and a myriad of other sites. My latest obsession is live streaming of video content. The first leg of the onAIR Tour Europe has given me a chance to really experiment with this medium using Qik.com’s service. While there are many kinks to work out, I have to say that this is one of the most enjoyable and painless mediums.

Today we are in Amsterdam at the Beurs van Berlage, an old Dutch stock exchange which is experiencing a second life as an event venue. I must admit, this is one of the coolest venues to date. I have taken a number of videos of this event which you can view on http://www.qik.com/danieldura/. I just posted a quick interview with Ted Patrick, where he is demoing a new project which will help HTML developers test and deploy AIR applications (embedded below.)

If you want to watch videos that we are streaming live from the tour, you can follow my secondary Twitter account http://www.twitter.com/dduraqik. Be warned, the live streams are sometimes a bit choppy, depending on the connection. But if you wait a few minutes, once the video is complete it is a much more pleasant experience. Hopefully the bandwidth issues should be solved soon.

The Webmaniacs Conference is coming up in May and I’ll be speaking during the FlexManiacs portion of it, which is May 21-23. My topic will be on Degrafa and the advancements we have made (or will have made). We’ve made a lot of progress for a group of devs working on it as a side [...]

As you may have heard, we are soon to head out on the first leg of the onAIR Tour in Europe. This time we will be sporting backpacks and making our way from city to city the European way, via trains (instead of our much beloved bus.) We have high expectations for this tour, we are already seeing amazing registration numbers. So if you have not registered, you will want to do it soon so you aren’t left out.

Register at the onAIR Tour website.

This demo / source file is one which was used during the Papervision3D Workshop in Amsterdam, during the fantastic FITC Amsterdam 2008 event. These are the modified final sources for the example I did at the end of the day. Although quite simple, I think they are very useful at illustrating on how to use [...]
